Mark Twain, part 1

Mark Twain, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" (526)

  • Read Mark Twain biographical information on pp. 523-4.
  • Look over definitions of Regionalism, Vernacular, Dialect, Hyperbole, Understatement, and other comic devices on 525.
  • Read "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
  • TELL THE TALE: Continue Simon Wheeler's final story from the piece. The first sentence of your story is "Well, thish-yer Smiley had a yaller one-eyed cow that didn't have no tail, only jest a short stump like a bannanner, and--"
Include some of the same characteristics Twain used in his story:
  1. the dialect and vernacular should be similar to Twain's
  2. the cow should have a first and last name (like Andrew Jackson and Daniel Webster)
  3. there should be something amazing about the cow on which Jim Smiley might bet.
Your story should be about one page. (HAND IN)
